LONDON, Sept. 16 — Fashionistas took a break from London’s catwalk shows on Monday to gather for a screening of the new documentary series “In Vogue: The 90s,” which looks back at one of fashion’s most exciting decades and how it influenced mainstream culture.
In this six-part series, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her colleagues talk about trends of the 1990s and how the worlds of fashion, music, and film came together.
“I remember how creative it was and how much of an idea it was, of models becoming celebrities and personalities and fashion really becoming more mainstream, more open to the world,” Wintour told reporters upon arriving for the screening.
“A lot of people took notice of it … fashion has become such a big part of the culture and people are becoming more familiar with it, which is obviously an example of where we are today.”
In the 1990s, emerging designers like John Galliano and the late Alexander McQueen stunned the fashion world with their creativity, Tom Ford took the helm of Italian luxury brand Gucci, and supermodels became all the rage.
“In Vogue: The 90s” features contributions from a number of famous names including models Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss, actors Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman, reality TV star Kim Kardashian as well as designers such as Ford, Galliano and Stella McCartney.
Designer Harris Reed said, “It was the ultimate fashion at its peak… I think it was back when shows were just performances, when budgets were much bigger, when things were much more experimental and there were fewer rules.”
Monday’s screening took place during London Fashion Week, the second leg of the spring-summer 2025 catwalk calendar that began in New York earlier this month and also includes stops in Milan and Paris.
The first three episodes of “In Vogue: The 90s” aired last Friday on Disney, and the remaining episodes will air this Friday.
