New Delhi, April 22 (PTI) Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday asked NCERT to include audio visual modules on road safety and suitable courses for students of class 1 to 12, so that students can be sensitive about traffic rules.
Addressing an incident here, Pradhan said that modules should be introduced as an alternative subject in this academic year (2025–26).
“Road safety may not be an alternative topic … I am directing the Ministry of Education and NCERT to prepare audio visual modules on road safety for age and courses suitable for courses suitable for students of class 1 to 12,” he said. According to the minister, about 25 crore students are studying in schools in India.
Speaking at the event, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there are 5 lakh accidents in India, causing 1.8 lakh deaths and 3 lakh people were hurt annually. The minister expressed concern that 10,000 deaths were of children under 18 years of age. Gadkari further said that the government has decided to give an award 25,000 people who will help accident victims.
“We have taken a decision that any third person who is going to help the accident victim, we will give him an award 25,000. Also, if an accident victim is admitted to any hospital, we will provide financial assistance 1.5 lakh for a maximum period of 7 days from the date of the accident, “he said.
The princes also suggested to include courses on energy conservation awareness in schools.
Gadkari said that the government has introduced several new rules, such as wearing a rear seat belt, and these habits should be taught early in childhood. “I would request the students to advise their parents to use mobile phones while driving, and encourage the behavior responsible on the roads,” he said.
Gadkari suggested that the school infrastructure such as entry and exit points should also be made safe, with lifts for children and elderly people.
