The mother of two in Singapore has lost more than 50 kg in just 17 months, and together with her family, they have lost a total of 100 kg, motivating each other. It all started with a New Year’s resolution in 2022. At that time, Sharifa Usman weighed 105 kg and felt the pressure of her health issues including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
After meeting with the doctor, she decided to take her and her family’s health seriously because she did not want to put the burden of raising three people, two parents and a sister with special needs, on her son.
According to The Straits Times, in early 2022, Sharifa faced significant health challenges that required regular medication. This reality check inspired her to prioritize her health. Her husband Supiyan also suffered heart attacks twice: one in 2012 and the other in March 2022. Concerned for both of their well-being, the couple realized it was time to make a permanent lifestyle change.
Here’s how the family achieved their goal
Sharifa started by consulting a personal trainer, Deen Mujahid, who helped her develop a balanced diet and exercise plan, eliminating all unhealthy foods and adding daily physical activities. Inspired by her progress, her husband Supiyan and son Saiyami also joined in, and adjusted their routines to support healthy habits.
Supian started walking and quit smoking after two heart attacks. Inspired by her mother’s dedication, Saiyami focused on staying active with regular Zumba sessions. Together, they set shared goals, went on family walks and bike rides that turned into a lasting, supportive health journey.
Sharifa’s fitness journey inspired her to take up running, something she had never done before. With the encouragement of her coach, she also participated in her first race, the Great Eastern Women’s Run, in 2023. He boosted his confidence and soon started participating in other events. She now dreams of running a family, showing how far they have come together.
