The evolution of tire technology explained: from pneumatics to self-healing tires and the future

Conversations about a vehicle’s performance, top speed and mileage wouldn’t hold any significant value if tires weren’t as effective as they are at translating spec-sheet numbers into something that can be experienced. Tires are among the most important aspects of any car or bike and one of mankind’s most important innovations. Since their inception, tires have single-handedly changed the way the world moves. From wooden wheels wrapped in leather to intelligent tires made from durable and high-performance compounds, tire technology has come a long way with no intention of hitting the brakes.

Goodyear, Dunlop, and pneumatic tires:

If the history of tires could be traced back to a single time, it would be the middle of the 19th century, when Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber in 1839. This process treated the rubber with sulfur to make it more durable and elastic, making its use on tires possible, among other aspects. This was taken further when John Boyd Dunlop invented the first practical pneumatic tire in 1888, involving a rubber tube filled with air. These were able to absorb shocks, greatly improving ride comfort and, thus, became standard in automobiles of the 1900s.

First tubeless tyre:

The tires will incorporate reinforced fabric design and tread pattern for better durability and grip. In the late 1940s, Goodyear developed the first tubeless tire by combining the inner casing and tube into one airtight unit. By the 50’s, these would become standard on most new cars on the market. Around the same time, manufacturers came up with the radial ply tire, which used steel belts positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel, which increased durability, flexibility, and fuel economy. With their superior performance on all fronts, they wasted no time in becoming the industry standard for automobiles.

In the 1990s, engineers began developing high-performance tires for specific driving conditions and types of cars. These included steel-belted tyres, run-flat tyres, as well as silica-based compounds, which affected wet grip, durability and fuel economy. With the growth in the EV sector, manufacturers started introducing tires with low rolling resistance that reduce the energy lost in friction. As our awareness of climate change and global warming continues to grow, tire manufacturers have moved toward eco-friendly manufacturing with sustainable methods such as using recycled or bio-based materials.

Tire Technology Developments: Airless Tires and Advanced Compounds

Some of the biggest innovations in tire technology came from motorsport, where manufacturers experimented to achieve every possible performance

The latest advancements cover a wide range of tire designs and concepts, of which airless tires are one of the most recent topics. Also known as non-pneumatic tyres, they do not depend on air pressure, and thus, do not run the risk of being punctured. Although they offer greater rolling resistance and lower levels of comfort than standard pneumatic tires, airless tires are also used on golf carts and bicycles as well as heavy equipment such as forklifts and construction machinery.

Tire manufacturers are additionally experimenting with a variety of compounds and materials to improve performance. From such experiments, graphene has emerged with great potential to boost sustainability and efficiency levels. Tires enhanced with graphene last longer, provide better traction and lower rolling resistance compared to tires made from regular compounds.

Self-healing rubber technology has also come a long way and has the potential to reduce a large portion of rubber waste by automatically healing small cuts and punctures. Self-healing tires are made of special compounds that react to the heat and pressure generated from rolling and seal the puncture without the need for a person’s entry.

Are smart tires the future?

However, the latest developments come from people who are pushing tires beyond their original intent. Smart tires are currently the name of the game, incorporating sensors that monitor air pressure, temperature and degradation to provide real-time feedback to drivers. Think of these as the next step up from TPMS, but have them also help auto-adjust electronic systems like ABS, ESP, and traction control.

Smart tires are also being integrated into the car’s Internet of Things (IoT) systems, enabling communication between not only vehicle systems but also city infrastructure. Such tires have the ability to provide data on road conditions and auto-optimize route planning, paving the way for fully autonomous driving.
