Tel Aviv: The Israeli army said on Wednesday that it has started “targeted ground activities” in Gaza. This operation was performed after the air strike a day earlier, which broke the two -month -old ceasefire deal with Hamas. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the operation was done to increase security zones in Central and Southern Gaza and to build a buffer zone between North and South Gaza. IDF said, “The army strengthened its control in the center of the Netzerim Corridor.” As part of the ceasefire agreement in January, Israel removed its army from the Netzance Corridor. This area divides Gaza into two parts. The north and central Gaza separates from the southern part, which is bordering the Egypt. However, foreign military contractors have still continued monitoring checkpoints between North and South Gaza.
After the implementation of the ceasefire, thousands of Palestinians passed through this corridor while traveling on foot, vehicles and even donkeys. Many of these people returned to see their destroyed houses. Israel on Tuesday night carried out a fierce air strike on Gaza. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 400 people were killed in these attacks. It was one of the deadliest days of war.
Demonstration against Netanyahu over the verdict
Anti -government protests took place outside the Israeli Parliament in Jerusalem on Wednesday. Thousands of people took to the streets over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to resume the war in Gaza. Critics say that Netanyahu is taking these steps to save his unstable government. Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that “if the hostages were not returned and Hamas continued to rule Gaza, then the people of Gaza will pay its full price.”
An Israeli official said that aerial attack in Gaza is a strategy to create military pressure. Its purpose is to pressurize Hamas so that it releases more hostages. So far, Israel has been able to bring back only 8 hostages out of 251 alive. The rest of the hostages were released in lieu of Palestinian prisoners under the previous ceasefire deal.
