In a recent ranking by popular food guide Taste Atlas, India’s beloved Ras Malai has secured the second position in the list of ’10 Best Paneer Desserts’ around the world. This delightful sweet dish, originating from West Bengal, was preceded by Poland’s Cernik, which was a baked cheesecake made with Twarog cheese.
Ras Malai, a quintessential Indian sweet, is a spongy and creamy delicacy prepared from fresh cheese called ‘Chhena’. Chhena is cooked in sugar syrup and soaked in cardamom flavored sweetened milk syrup known as ‘Rabri’, which is garnished with chopped almonds and pistachios. Traditionally enjoyed during festivals like Holi and Diwali, Ras Malai is eaten cold.

Taste Atlas’ rankings highlight the diversity and richness of cheese desserts around the world. Cernik, the top-ranked dessert, is a cheesecake made from eggs, sugar and tvarog cheese, often baked on a cake base in pieces and sometimes topped with jelly and fruit.

The list also includes other famous cheese desserts, including the United States’ classic New York-style cheesecake, the light and airy Japanese Cheesecake, and Spain’s Basque Cheesecake, known for its distinctive burnt top.

Other notable entries in the top 10 include Sfakianopita from Greece, Rákóczi Turos from Hungary, Melopita from Greece, Käskuchen from Germany and Misa Rezi from the Czech Republic, demonstrating the versatility of cheese in dessert preparations across different cultures.
The recognition of Ras Malai as one of the world’s best paneer desserts is a testament to India’s rich culinary heritage and the enduring popularity of this delicious dessert.
