Researchers can apply for fellowships to study rare historical documents in Tamil Nadu Archives.
Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiyan on Monday announced that applications are now being invited from researchers who want to study rare and valuable historical documents preserved in the state archives.
According to the minister, a total of 20 selected researchers will be provided a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 to support their work.
“Applications will be accepted till November 28,” he said.
In his statement, Chezhian pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Archives holds government departmental records dating back more than three centuries, providing an important resource for historical research and study.
Highlighting the long and important history of the collection, he said, “This collection, formerly known as ‘Madras Record Office’, has been functioning in its present building since 1909. Books dating back to 1633 and documents from 1670 onwards are preserved here.”
The Minister further said that it was announced in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly that the Tamil Nadu Council of Historical Research, which was established in 1973 with the objective of promoting knowledge of the state’s history, would be reorganized to better suit contemporary needs, with 10 to 15 studies being conducted annually.
“Orders have been issued for reconstitution of Tamil Nadu Historical Research Council and grant of research fellowship to 20 persons for historical studies,” Chezhiyan said.
The statement also said that applications are now open from Monday for postgraduate degree holders as well as independent researchers who wish to undertake one-year research projects, which will provide them an opportunity to explore and study the rich historical records of the state in depth.
