Taiwan’s presidential office accused China of escalating tensions with Japan for political gain, hours after Chinese maritime authorities announced plans for live-fire missile exercises in the Yellow Sea. China’s Maritime Safety Administration has issued a navigation alert saying the People’s Liberation Army will launch missiles with live warheads into the central Yellow Sea from Tuesday to Thursday, The Taipei Times reports.
China also issued a travel warning on Friday claiming Chinese citizens face increased criminal risks in Japan, an advisory widely seen as retaliation for comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takachi, according to The Taipei Times. During a parliamentary session, Takachi said that the Chinese naval blockade of Taiwan could be classified as an “existential-threat situation” for Japan, potentially activating its self-defense mechanisms.
