Abu Mohammad Al Julani is the father of political storm in Syria. Julani is the rebel leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the main group leading the armed opposition. Abu Mohammad Al Julani is its founder. For almost a decade he has been trying to establish his group as an influential national power. Its objective is to make Syria an Islamic republic. Since 2016, al-Julani has been trying to separate HTS’s image from its international roots. He is keeping his focus on governance within the Syrian borders. Under his leadership, ATS established the Syrian Salvation Government in 2017. It takes care of civil services, education, health services in Idlib province.
What is the background of Abu Mohammad Al-Julani?
There is controversy over the birth place of rebel leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani. Some people claim that he was born Ahmed Hussein Al-Shara in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1982. So some say it happened in Syria. Some say that his father was a petroleum engineer there. Some say that it was a grocery shop. His family later settled in Damascus. The childhood name of Abu Mohammad al-Julani is Ahmed al-Shara. He rarely shows his face. He also has connections with Al Qaeda. Before becoming the commander of a group linked to Al Qaeda in the Syrian civil war, Al Julani served a sentence in an American prison in Iraq. America has still placed a reward of 10 million dollars on him.
Connection with Al Qaeda and American reward
If we believe Ahmed Al-Shara i.e. Abu Mohammad Al-Julani, his early life was full of struggles. His family was forced to leave their home in the Golan Heights during the 1967 war. In a 2021 interview with PBS’s “Frontline,” Julani talked about growing up in Damascus and working in his father’s grocery store. But following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and the subsequent US-led war on terrorism, he traveled to Baghdad to fight against the American invasion there. He joined Al-Qaeda in Iraq. America considers Al Qaeda a terrorist organization. He was arrested in Mosul in 2005, when he was 23 years old. He spent several years in the American prison at Camp Bucca. Julani was released from US custody after five years. By then, Al Qaeda-Iran had rebranded itself as the Islamic State in Iraq under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. However, Julani later left Al Qaeda. And he parted ways with Baghdadi.

The rebel group claims that Bashar al-Assad has left the country and gone to an unknown place. Meanwhile, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali issued a video statement saying that he is ready to hand over the reins of governance to the opposition peacefully. Amidst these developments, it appears that the government has fallen and the 50-year rule of the Assad family in Syria has come to an end. It was claimed that Assad took off from Damascus early on Sunday. Residents of the capital have heard sounds of firing and explosions. The rebels were seen celebrating a lot. There was massive looting in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Iran’s state television channel, which was Assad’s main supporter during the war in Syria, reported that Assad had left the capital. Crowds of Syrians gathered in Damascus squares to celebrate, chanting anti-Assad slogans and honking car horns. In some areas, bullets were also fired in celebration.
