Sumukhi Suresh cannot remain calm. Not that she wants to. The stand-up comedian is currently touring the country with her show Homonal, which she started in Europe. Just a few months ago, he wrote the dialogues for Vikramaditya Motwane’s Netflix screen-life thriller CTRL. And soon she will be seen acting in the Netflix show The Royals. Juggling three hats requires a lot of agility, but not if you’re the smart one, who can put all three hats into one big hat and wear it like a boss.

No juggling, just hustle

“Honestly, I’d love to do all three, and maybe even more if I get the chance. I am that artiste who has to do everything to become a good artiste. Sumukhi says in an exclusive interview, “I think it is easier to keep a limit in whatever I do.” She also feels that the three of them provide a lot of information to each other. For example, while she could use her improvisational skills to make her Royals character her own, she was wary of trashing the writing. She adds, “I am a writer myself, so I don’t want to disrupt the structure that they have worked so hard to create.”

With The Royals, Sumukhi returned to acting after three years with her Amazon MiniTV show Hum Do Teen Chaar alongside fellow comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath. The writer and stand-up comedian has been on the forefront ever since she started her content house Motormouth Writers, which specializes in telling stories of ‘villainous’ women. But with Dharma joining Cornerstone Agency, he feels acting will soon be left behind. “I don’t think it’s a back seat as much as an opportunity, to be honest. I want to do everything, which is great, but I can’t manage everything alone, right? Its proper management is giving me a chance to know everything completely,” insists Sumukhi.

domestic imbalance

Of all the things that Sumukhi is unable to balance, the only thing that affects her are her hormones. “When I turned 30, I was asked to stop dating like most women in India, but we wanted to explore that side. “It is very difficult for girls to date in their 30s because the options become less,” says Sumukhi. But she is using all the imbalance and ‘bad luck’ as ammunition for her Homonal tour, the next stop of which is in Mumbai on December 6. “The writing is satirical and personal, and ultimately, hopefully, sad. ‘Homonal’ because I’m failing to be a ‘hoe’ at managing my hormonal issues,” she adds.

Sumukhi has a habit of taking these bad words for women and turning them into gold. Be it his hoodies with ‘Ho’ written on them or his previous show called ‘Disgust Me’ in which he invited only women and discussed every disgusting thing, he is the man when it comes to talking about hormonal impulses. Sumukhi has no objection to being ridiculed. The most notable example of this is their Prime Video show Pushpavalli, which revolves around a woman who moves to the city for a boy and is constantly pursued by him. He generalized women as stalkers without ever supporting the act.

Pushpavalli Ax

Pushpavalli ran successfully for two seasons, before being axed in the third season. She never meant for Sumukhi to call, but she retroactively realizes that it all happened at the right time. “The direction of OTT also changed. Pushpavalli came out at a very good time. I am really glad that it was part of a very good series of their (Prime Video India) shows at that time. I don’t think Pushpavalli will be able to survive now. I think it came out then and has aged well,” Sumukhi reasons. “Surprisingly it (the show not being renewed) was very okay with me. I would be very sad if there wasn’t a season 2. My actors don’t agree with it, my writers don’t agree with it, and my directors definitely don’t agree with it, but I am,” she adds.

Sumukhi also attributes this to her romantic notion of not ending the character’s love life. She also moved cities for a boy, and realized the hard way that the hustle doesn’t always guarantee victory, especially in matters of the heart. “I’m very poetic and very writerly here, isn’t it romantic that it didn’t end up? This is his life also. So of course, there is no season 3 because it is not intended to finish its story. “I have accepted it that way,” Sumukhi confesses. This also helped her start Motormouth and eventually got her a chance to write dialogues in Vikramaditya Motwane’s film.

Directors’ share now

“Whatever project I do, I want you to wonder, ‘How did Sumukhi get there?’ Like CTRL is technology and thriller, but I want you to go, ‘Really?’ That’s why I wanted to work with Vikramaditya Motwane – every time he does something, it’s different from the previous one,” Sumukhi says of her director’s rich, genre-hopping filmography at the time. She remembers watching when she was “not even close to the stage” and wanted to work with him. “Even though I am a complete Dharma girl, Motwane’s films are not so emotional because they are grown up, but It happens because of the situation. And this is really poetic,” adds Sumukhi.

He also received appreciation from Anurag Kashyap for writing for CTRL. Motwane recently joked that Sumukhi and Anurag have something in common as dialogue writers – giving the final draft the night before shooting. Sumukhi admits her guilt and justifies that she keeps “rewriting and rewriting”, but the comparison doesn’t bother her at all. “Anurag Kashyap is the gold standard of dialogue writing. It’s great to be compared to them in any way. Also, Vikram told me that you are one of my favorite dialogue writers. And I said, ‘Really? I made it? I have reached the top 10? I think I’ve really pissed off male writers. The fun part was taking the boys’ pee out. It’s fair, it’s like Tina Fey coming and saying Sumukhi is not my favorite writer, some guy is. I’d say, ‘Shut up Tina!’

But if she is really a Dharma Girl, as she claims – and is now represented by DCA – then why did she never pursue Karan Johar, like she did, for telling Motwane at an event Was that he is desperate to cooperate. “Of course, I want to work with Karan Johar. Who doesn’t? But I think this is not the right way. Religion is a different breed. My first memory of films is Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. “I didn’t come to the city thinking I’d ever meet Karan Johar,” says Sumukhi. She also thought it was a prank when the filmmaker slipped a long note in her DMs about being in love with Pushpavalli. Sent. “I thought it was one of those where you write Karan Johar and add a blue tick to your name. When I realised, I went home, cooked food and said, ‘What! He actually messaged!’ So meeting her is definitely wow, but impressing her is next level. For eight-year-old Sumukhi, that’s, ‘Hey!’

Also on Sumukhi’s dream list are Piku and October writer Juhi Chaturvedi and Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes. “I want to be like Shonda Rhimes in life. The power he had in creating these properties. Just look at Bridgerton! That’s why I wanted to create Motormouth, a team that makes shows for streaming platforms. It will take time, but I am in no hurry,” says Sumukhi. “When I give her the lead, she can probably keep up with Banita Sandhu, who has worked with both Juhi and Shonda in October and Bridgerton Season 3, respectively,” she says. “Oh yes, she’s one step closer to Shonda. I have to be friends with Banita now. I’m glad you’re following my networking, I really appreciate it,” Sumukhi quipped.

Sumukhi is currently waiting for the volatility of the streaming industry to calm down before she can introduce the three IPs she developed under Motormouth, as well as a film she co-wrote with Vir Das. Still working. As she continues to hustle, she also doesn’t forget to show up. “Working with Vikramaditya Motwane is a classic easygoing way of just moving forward, just being behind him. But the possibility of working with Karan Johar in the future is like a dream come true. Two different feelings – one, I’ve earned it, and two, hopefully whatever I’m doing comes through to me,” she says.
