Sugar has become a staple of our diets, hidden in everything from sweets and soft drinks to sauces and packaged foods. Although it adds sweetness and energy, excessive consumption can have serious consequences on overall health.
Dr. Saket Goyal, a Kota-based cardiologist and heart specialist with over 30 years of experience, in his November 18 Instagram post shared how sugar can harm heart health, disrupt mental balance and lead to long-term health problems. How does excess sugar affect health?
“Sugar is not just a sweetener,” says Dr. Saket. “When we consume sugar, it triggers the release of another hormone called insulin in the body. Insulin not only lowers blood sugar levels, but it also promotes fat storage in the body. That’s why even if you’re eating moderately, excess sugar can still contribute to weight gain and other health problems.”
He says, “If there’s one basic rule for any healthy diet, it would be a zero-sugar approach. Avoid all forms of sugar and sugar substitutes in your diet. Cutting back on sugar is essential not only for maintaining a healthy weight, but also for protecting your heart, metabolism, and overall well-being. By following this principle, you can truly be healthy and safe. Stay Healthy, Stay Safe.”
What the study shows
According to a 2023 study published in the journal Nutrients, excessive intake of free or added sugars has markedly negative effects on human health, affecting obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cognition, and mood, while health effects vary depending on carbohydrate class and source, and further research is needed to clarify these relationships in different populations.
