This is the story of IAS Pretake Jain, the new District Magistrate of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. On handling his role as DM, Pretake decided to cross the path of Kedarnath walking on foot, just like any other devotee, just like any other devotee. The way, he interacted with pilgrims and locals, saw a witness to the challenges faced by them. A video of this journey went viral, causing him to make the headlines. Let’s know his story.
PRETEK JAIN became an IAS officer at the age of 25. Born on 25 July 1993 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, he is the 2018 batch IAS officer. He completed his graduation in Mechanical Engineering and Biological Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and later received a master’s degree in public management from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2020.
PRETEK first attempted the UPSC Civil Serviion Examination in 2016, in which both prelims and the main were cleaned, but disappeared in the final list. However, he secured Air 3 in the Indian Forest Service (IFOS) in the same year. Still determined to become an IAS, he resumed UPSC CSE in 2017, achieved Air 86 and met his target at the age of 25.

Initially, Prateek served as a CDO in Haridwar and then as Deputy Collector in Nainital. He has now been appointed as DM of Rudraprayag, who has become the youngest DM there. Rudraprayag Char Dham is especially famous for Kedarnath Yatra, but also faces important challenges during the monsoon season. Taking charge, Pretake immediately assessed the path of running Kedarnath from Gaurikund to Kedarnath for 24 km, where he sought blessings from Baba Kedarnath. On the way, he spoke with the local people and tourists, listening to their concerns. This active approach has earned him widespread praise on social media, which highlights his dedication and responsibility.
