Subhash Ghai said AR Rahman and Anand Bakshi did not talk to each other while working on the musical romantic-drama Taal.
Subhash Ghai recently shared interesting facts about his musical romantic-drama film Taal. The filmmaker recalled the unique collaboration between AR Rahman and late lyricist Anand Bakshi while working on the film. Subhash revealed in an interview with Radio Nasha that there was a communication barrier between the composer-lyricist duo as one couldn’t speak in English while the other didn’t know Hindi. Recalling the initial challenges due to the language barrier during the shoot, the filmmaker said, “When I first introduced Anand Bakshi and AR Rahman, Anand ji didn’t know English and Rahman didn’t know Hindi. I placed a harmonium between them, thinking maybe there could be some jugalbandi. They asked each other, ‘No, aap kuchh bajao,’ ‘No, aap kuchh bajao.’ But after 15 minutes of silence, I realised there was a communication gap.” He added, “One didn’t know English and the other didn’t know Hindi.”
However, Subhash said that despite the initial challenges, the two artists eventually found a way to work together. AR Rahman first composed the music and then Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics.
About the rhythm
Taal featured Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles. The film also featured Alok Nath, Amrish Puri, Mita Vashisht, Saurabh Shukla, Sushma Seth, Manoj Pahwa and others in pivotal roles. Taal is a love story about class divide, where Manav, the son of a businessman, falls in love with Manasi, an aspiring singer. When Manasi’s father is humiliated by Manav’s family, she becomes a pop singer with the help of popular musician Vikrant. Taal premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival, was an official selection at the 2005 Ebertfest: Roger Ebert’s Film Festival, and was retrospectively screened in the Celebrating Dance section in Indian Cinema at the 45th IFFI.
