A 13 -year -old boy died, and 28 others were admitted to the hospital after suspected food poisoning in an unauthorized hostel in Mandya, Karnataka.

In a suspected case of food poisoning, a 13 -year -old boy died, and 28 other prisoners of an unauthorized hostel run by a private school here were admitted to the hospital on Sunday after complaining of stomach pain after consumption of food prepared for Holi ceremony, police said.
He said that the deceased, known as Kerlong, asked Meghalaya.
Police said the incident took place at Gokula Vidya Samsath in T Kijpura village of Malwali Taluk in Mandya district.
Citing an initial investigation, Superintendent of Police (Mandya), Mallikrajun Baladandi told PTI that the school, who has been working since 1989, did not have a license to run a hostel.
The management was illegally operating the hostel on the first floor of the school building, including toilets for children without proper infrastructure.
A total of 202 students study in school from LKG to class 8, with around 30 students – most of them continue in Hostels from Meghalaya. The school allegedly follows a system where hostel students receive food from nearby events, ceremonies or weddings, they said.
On March 14, a group of Malwali organized a feast as part of the Holi celebrations, serving vegetables and chutney for breakfast. Police said the remaining food was later distributed to 30 students in school hostels.
Of these 30 students, 24 are from Meghalaya, while the remaining locals are, he said.
On March 14, no student reported restlessness, pain or disease. However, the next day, six students complained of abdominal pain and admitted to the hospital, he said.
On Sunday, a 13 -year -old boy fell and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Of the 28 hospitalized students, seven are in critical condition, and on a ventilator, he said.
“We have registered a case under Section 286 (negligent conduct about a poisonous substance) and Section 106 (due to negligent death), which has arrested three people in connection with the incident,” he said.
Those arrested include cooks who prepared food, the hostel warden to distribute the remaining food without checking his quality, and the school owner for negligence, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Mandya Dr. Kumar told reporters that the Health Department was informed on 15 March, and the officials visited the school. Overall, 30 children consumed food and faced food poisoning.
“Unfortunately, a 13-year-old student has died, who is deeply saddened. We have informed their parents. The remaining 29 students are receiving treatment, eight have already been transferred to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS). Orders have been issued to transfer other students, as well as MIMS experts.
He said, “Our top priority is treating the affected students and ensuring their recovery. A check will be done in school facilities, permissions and food suppliers, and appropriate legal action will be taken.”
He said, “Prima Facial, the negligence of the school is clear – how did they allow any external party to supply food without permission? He had no authority to run the hostel,” he said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah faced ‘X’ and expressed his grief over the incident, saying that it was a heartbreaking to learn about the death of the student and many others after consuming food in a private residential school in T. Kejpura.
“As soon as the incident came to my attention, I spoke to the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya and instructed them to ensure proper treatment for the children and take strict action against those responsible. The police arrested three accused, and the investigation is on,” he said.
Siddaramaiah also assured that the family of the deceased boy would get proper compensation.
He said, “Everyone should be extra vigilant before consuming food from external sources, especially when serving young children. Negligence should lose precious life,” he said.
