Public Toilets and Women’s Health: A woman’s guide to safe use of public toilets and prevention of UTIs or fungal infections
Many of the women who use public toilets are at a higher risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and fungal infections, so women should take the necessary precautions if they need to use public toilets in an emergency. Many women who are traveling for leisure or work-related purposes have no choice but to use public toilets, especially during long-distance trips.
Unfortunately, everyone is aware of the reality that public toilets are not maintained properly and do not have adequate water supply. The toilets are not safe at all and can lead to several infections that can affect the overall health of women.
Infections associated with public toilets
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Amit Bansal, Urologist at Apollo Spectra in Karol Bagh, Delhi, highlights various infections associated with public toilets that can create a difficult time for women –
- Urinary tract infection (UTI): Using public toilets, though often unavoidable for most women, can cause them to face health problems. Many women experience urinary tract infections (UTIs), which occur when bacteria enter the urinary system. Its symptoms are cloudy and smelly urine, abdominal pain, urinary incontinence, frequent urination, blood in urine while urinating, and back pain. A person with these symptoms will need immediate medical attention to control the infection immediately. Untreated UTIs can affect a person’s physical and mental health. The person is often stressed, anxious, and depressed.
- fungal infection As yeast infections can thrive in warm and moist bathroom spaces and in areas with inadequate ventilation or poor hygiene standards, women using these facilities may experience vaginal irritation and discomfort until significant symptoms appear.
Tips for using public toilets safely
- When women face an emergency situation, i.e. they have the urge to urinate or defecate, they have no choice but to choose facilities that are well-lit, clean and have adequate supply of essential items and water.
- Carry personal hygiene products, such as disposable toilet seat covers or portable sanitizers, to maintain hygiene and avoid contact with contaminated surfaces.
- It is important to sit while urinating and try to use Indian toilets, this reduces the chances of UTI. If you are using a western toilet, keep your seat cover with you, use tissues and clean the seat with a sanitizer before sitting.
- Avoid washing the vaginal area with toilet paper available in public toilets, instead carry your essentials with you.
- Use a tissue when pressing the flush button.
- Urine cups can also be a good option for women when they are out and are easy to clean and carry. Ladies, be cautious when it comes to your health and follow these important instructions if you have to use public toilets.
