Research internship will be done in the fourth year of the four-year UG programme. A supervisor will be assigned to each student who will help them complete their projects on time
Students who are able to secure a research internship in any industry in the fourth year of their graduate program will receive a stipend, insurance, and academic credit. As per the University Grants Commission guidelines, which have been shared with higher educational institutions, the companies where students will do internship will provide them a certain amount of money.
Higher educational institutions will have to appoint nodal officers for research internships who will enter into agreements with various companies for the programme. Additionally, higher education institutions may also look for group internship opportunities.
The research internship will be undertaken in the fourth year of the four-year undergraduate programme. An internship supervisor will be assigned to each student who will help the students complete their projects on time.
UGC had sought suggestions from its stakeholders for the draft of these guidelines.
UGC Chairman M Jagadish Kumar said that as per the National Education Policy 2020, it has implemented a credit framework at the graduation level.
He said that internship has been made mandatory to increase the employability of students.
A survey regarding local market requirements will be conducted by the educational institutions to decide on research internships. Internship projects will be prepared on the basis of the survey and course being conducted.
Educational institutions will have to publish information about internship projects and mentors for this purpose.
UGC is of the view that joint research projects should be encouraged at the university level and there should be student career counseling cells in university colleges.
It says that industry representatives should also be involved in career counselling.
Professionals from industries should also be involved for the implementation of professional and skill development programmes.
As per UGC guidelines, a consortium of state level universities, colleges and industries should be formed to facilitate students of higher educational institutions doing joint research.

The duration of the program may be extended on the recommendation of the company in which they are interning.
The UGC Chairman said that higher educational institutions will have to make arrangements for API integration on their portals so that experts from companies or agencies can register on it.
Internship projects will be linked to the skill development courses of the students.
