Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk also expressed disbelief at the show’s Golden Globe nomination for Season 2.
Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk has shared his thoughts on the show’s surprising Golden Globe nomination for Season 2. In a candid interview, Hwang expressed his initial disbelief upon hearing the news and explained his belief that the second season, despite the recognition, would ultimately not take home the award. It came as a surprise to everyone when Squid Game Season 2 was nominated for the Golden Globes 2025 in the Best Television Series-Drama category in December, before its release. The series was selected after the judges were given early access to episodes of the latest season.

Hwang never thought the sequel would win the Golden Globes 2025
Hwang revealed why he did not expect the sequel to win any awards. He shared, “To be honest, when I decided to split it into two parts—Season 2 and 3, I had no expectations of awards regarding Season 2.” He further added, “Since the story is not complete and the message I wanted to convey is not fully across, I thought it would be difficult to win the award in this state. To achieve such recognition, the story needs to be presented in its entirety, and that has not happened yet. So, I wasn’t expecting anything at all,” as reported by Koreaboo.
He further added, “I was shocked and surprised that it was nominated even before its release. Just being one of the six works selected feels like winning a prize. I am very satisfied with it.”

Hwang on Squid Game Season 3
Speaking about the next anticipated season of Squid Game, Hwang spoke about his belief that the season would deliver the message and narrative he wanted to deliver to the audience. “During Season 1, there were overlapping issues with COVID-19 and the Golden Globes boycott over diversity concerns,” he said. I couldn’t attend the ceremony and only actor Oh Young Soo received the award. This time, I am happy and grateful to have got the opportunity to participate.”
Hwang said, “Personally, I don’t have very high expectations of winning any awards, but if I want to aim for something, it might be Season 3, when the conclusion of the story will be revealed.”
