Egypt High Speed Train: Egypt has attracted the world’s attention by launching the high-speed Velaro train with a speed of 250 km/h. Egypt has caught the world’s attention by launching the high-speed Velaro train with a speed of 250 km/h. A train that can run fast even in difficult climates like desert and will reduce the travel time by 50% on the 2000 km network. This marvel of high-speed technology is so advanced that people are calling it a scene from a science-fiction film and jokingly asking – is this a train or a horse like Maharana Pratap’s Chetak? Imagine, if such speed comes in India then it would be just 4 hours from Delhi to Bihar! This Egyptian project is being considered the biggest step in Africa’s high-speed rail mission.
Recently, Siemens Mobility has introduced its new Velaro high-speed train model in Egypt, which can run at a top speed of 250 km/h i.e. 155 mph. This train will run on Egypt’s 2000 km long high-speed network in the coming time and will completely change the connectivity of the country. In the eyes of the world, this project has now emerged as Africa’s most ambitious rail mission.
Siemens Mobility made the public debut of these trains during the TransMEA 2025 show in the Egyptian capital Cairo. The Velaro train is not only high-speed, but also has a capacity of 489 passengers, modern design and the ability to withstand harsh weather like desert. Egypt says that the high-speed network will reduce travel time by 50% and 90% of the population will directly benefit from it.
Egypt’s high-speed rail network will be a total of 2000 kilometers long. It includes three main lines. These have been designed to connect the biggest cities of the country and strengthen the economic corridor. Siemens, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors are jointly preparing this entire network. This project was first announced in 2018 and is now on its biggest leap.
Velaro trains are being designed and manufactured in Germany. In the desert areas of Egypt, strong sunlight, temperatures up to 45°C, sand and dust can quickly damage the machine. For this reason, high-grade cooling system, advanced air filter and sand-resistant features have been added to the train. This is the first train which has been specially modified for the African desert areas.
On November 9, Siemens’ Desiro High Capacity train also completed its maiden journey. The train reaches speeds of 160 km/h and is part of Egypt’s new 660 km long Green Line network, which is being called the “Suez Canal on Rails”. This line will connect ports and cities from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean and will increase Egypt’s freight capacity by 46%.
Before Egypt, Morocco had launched high-speed rail in Africa. The Tangier-Casablanca line was started here in 2018, which runs at a speed of 320 km/h. Now Nigeria is also working on a 60-billion dollar high-speed project, which will be 4000 KM long. The African Union plans to give a new direction to trade and connectivity in the coming decades by connecting the continent through high-speed rail.
High-speed rail has become a necessity of modern times. It is fast, safe, environment friendly and beneficial for both passengers and industry. Low prices, high time savings. Africa believes that high-speed rail will reduce transportation costs by 40% in the coming years and increase internal trade from 15% to more than 50%. This is why the world is now running in this direction.
