Who composed Jai Ho? No one ever thought that there would be such a debate, whereas maestro AR Rahman has always been given credit. But filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s sensational claims in a recent interview left the internet confused.
He said that singer Sukhwinder Singh, who has also sung Jai Ho, ghost composed it and Rahman only got the credit. But HT City contacted Singh himself and he completely rejected the claim. Jai Ho was originally made for filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s Salman Khan starrer Yuvvraaj (2008).
“AR Rahman has composed the song, I have only sung it. Ram Gopal Varma ji koi chhoti hasti toh nahi hain, shayad unhe kuchh galat pata chala hoga,” he starts off, “Gulzar sahab had written this song, Rahman liked it. Then he composed it in my studio in Juhu, Mumbai. I had not sung the song till that point of time.”
Ghai, while praising the song, says he did not want it for his film. “He said that since the character he wanted to sing for had become mischievous in the story, this song was not fitting in. He wanted a more masaladaar song. He told Rahman, but he insisted that it was good. I also said, ‘Do a little change’, but then he left and requested Gulzar Sahab to stay for 10-15 minutes. I replied that he has written it so okay, let me try to sing it, it was the same Jai Ho that you hear today, I sent it to Rahman Sahab, who also narrated it to the director of Slumdog Millionaire Rahman gave his word. Nibhaya and gave another song to Subhash ji for Yuvraj,” he shared.
Singh feels had he sung and then made Subhash ji listen to Jai Ho, the decision would have been different. “Voice also has an impact. Danny Boyle liked my voice. There was a little bit of singing, so I had to add it myself, I had sent Rahman to sing for the sake of fun, maybe he could come in a film. Mejhko. It seems that if Subhash ji had sung, it would have been different in the half hour I had recorded,” he beams.
