Total solar eclipse 2024: Millions of people across North America were able to view the total solar eclipse as the clouds parted just in time for many observers, the AP reports.
A huge audience, including a few hundred million residents living in or near the eclipse path and many visitors from far and wide, watched the event, making it the largest eclipse audience ever seen on the continent. Texas remains cloudy as eclipse spreads across country
As the total solar eclipse began its diagonal journey over land, Texas found itself largely under clouds. The eclipse’s trajectory began off the mainly visible Pacific coast of Mexico, passing through Texas and 14 other U.S. states, before spreading across the North Atlantic near Newfoundland.

Ahead of Monday’s spectacle, the most promising prospects for clear skies were over northern New England and parts of Canada, a forecast that proved true throughout the event.
During the peak of Monday’s eclipse, the Moon completely covered the Sun, plunging the surroundings into twilight. Only the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, was visible. The prolonged darkness brought silence among the birds and other wildlife, while the planets and stars emerged in the sky.

In just 1 hour and 40 minutes, the Moon’s shadow traveled more than 4,000 miles (6,500 km) across the continent, leaving behind a trail of awe and wonder.
The path of totality, approximately 115 miles (185 km) wide, connects several major cities, including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, New York, and Montreal. An estimated 44 million individuals live within the tracks, while several hundred million more are located within a 200-mile (320-kilometre) radius.

Historic event attracts enthusiastic response, expert teams
“This may be the most observed astronomical event in history,” remarked Teasle Muir-Harmony, curator of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, while awaiting the partial eclipse.
Experts from NASA and various universities positioned themselves in the eclipse’s path, deployed research rockets and weather balloons, and conducted experiments to gain valuable insights from this extraordinary astronomical event.
