An Uttar Pradesh Congress leader on Wednesday said party leader Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi – a constituency he has represented several times since 2002.
Smriti Irani said on Wednesday, “I don’t know who will be the Congress candidate (from Amethi), but it is a strange sight in Congress politics that for the first time Congress is taking so much time to declare its candidate.” ‘ Amethi. This is a sign of Congress’s defeat…”
Smriti Irani’s statement comes amid intense speculation that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi aims to regain control of the Amethi seat after the 2019 defeat. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi represented Amethi in Parliament from 2002 to 2019.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi lost the Amethi seat to Smriti Irani.
Congress district president Pradeep Singhal, who returned after a meeting in Delhi, said Gandhi will be the party’s candidate from Amethi and his name will be announced soon.
However, there has been no statement from the central leadership of the party on this matter. The party’s Central Election Committee meeting is yet to be held.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the first meeting of the Central Election Committee of the Congress will be held on March 7 at 6 pm.
Amethi remains an interesting seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections – if Rahul Gandhi becomes the Congress candidate, or if someone else replaces Rahul Gandhi.
Amethi has been a Congress stronghold since the 1980s and Rahul Gandhi has represented the constituency since 2002.
A few weeks ago, when the Congress yatra passed through Amethi, Jairam Ramesh had said that Amethi still wants Rahul Gandhi. If Rahul Gandhi is not fielded, all eyes will be on the Congress leader, who will face a tough fight.
There is also speculation about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s election debut from Rae Bareli as Sonia Gandhi has vacated the seat and gone to Rajya Sabha. Like Amethi, Rae Bareli is also a stronghold of Congress.
