Tips to choose the right facial for your skin type and needs

Dr. Jyoti Gupta, MD Dermatology, New Delhi says, “Before getting a Medifacial, your dermatologist will do a proper analysis of your skin. For oily or acne-prone skin, your dermatologist will recommend exfoliation, oil reduction peels, IPL-based laser or pore reduction laser. Opt for a moisturizing mask or hydrating serum to finish. For normal skin, choose a facial that includes deep cleansing, exfoliation, de-tanning laser, infusions for hydration and rejuvenating peels.”

She further told HT Lifestyle, “For sensitive skin, avoid exfoliating facials or use mild non-suction based exfoliation with IPL based calming laser and infusion of serums. Dehydrated skin is better with less exfoliation and more infusion of serums, if the patient is ready to rest after the procedure then go for micro infusion and vampire facials. For tanned or unevenly-pigmented skin, choose a facial that provides radiance, such as laser toning, peels or hydrating masks. And for ageing skin, radio frequency based facials such as HIFU and Endymed RF are best to reduce loose skin and provide a youthful glow.”

Here are the different types of facials recommended by Dr. Jyothi for different skin types:

1. Classic Medifacial

Microdermabrasion and scrubbers are used to remove dead skin cells, while ultrasound is used to tighten the skin. Additionally, serums are used for hydration and a radiant glow. A hydrating sheet mask is then applied along with LED light therapy for soft and relaxed skin. This comprehensive treatment is generally suitable for all skin types.

2. Hydrafacial

This treatment simultaneously empties pores and contains powerful active ingredients to moisturize, brighten, soften, and protect the skin. However, it is especially recommended for individuals with normal skin.

3. Laser toning

This treatment provides a glow to the face and is ideal for patients with pigment irregularities, uneven complexion or dark skin.

4. Photofacial

This therapy uses various devices that emit light to treat skin problems such as discoloration, acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, clogged pores, rosacea and blemishes. However, it is especially recommended for individuals with sensitive skin.

5. Anti-Clock Facial/ Andymed RF

This is a series of 3DEEP radio frequency treatments that lift, tighten and shape the face without any post treatment downtime. Best suited for ageing and sagging skin.

6. Vampire facial

Your dermatologist injects blood drawn from your body into your face using a syringe or microneedling (a device that looks like a lint roller with tiny needles sticking out of it). This helps reduce wrinkles, plump up loose skin, get rid of deep folds, improve complexion, and reduce acne scars. It is best suited for aging or dehydrated skin.

Dr. Jyoti suggested the following points to keep in mind while getting a facial:

  • Exfoliation, especially dermabrasion, can cause broken capillaries and increase redness in sensitive skin.
  • Over-massaging your face can clog pores and increase acne.
  • Too much bleaching agents can irritate the skin, especially dry skin, and cause pigmentation.
  • It is important to note that medical facials are different from salon facials. Always consult your dermatologist about potential downtime and suitability for your skin type before any facial treatment.
