Mumbai: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday stressed the importance of education for economic growth and highlighted the work done by the government in the field of education and technology.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new campus of BITS Pilani, he stressed the need for interdisciplinary courses and development of 5G technology indigenously.
According to Sitharaman, since 2014 India has seen significant growth in its educational infrastructure with the establishment of new IITs, IIMs, universities and colleges aimed at enhancing the educational landscape of the country. He said that more than 1.4 crore youth have been trained under the Skill India Mission, which shows the government’s commitment towards education and skill development.
He said, “We are ensuring that budgetary allocations are being made and at the same time the government is actively pursuing mutual recognition of educational qualifications and trying to sign MoUs with countries so that they can use our Can take students.” Such MoUs have been signed with France, Australia, UAE and India is in talks with many other countries for such agreements.
The minister also highlighted India’s progress in technology, especially in developing its own 5G technology without foreign aid. He said that this achievement is an important step towards India’s self-reliance in critical technology areas. The government has also been active in the semiconductor industry, investing in areas such as manufacturing and design.
Sitharaman stressed the need to create market-relevant curriculum that equips students with the skills required for employability. Emphasis was placed on the need for skilled professionals, particularly in law and technology, to meet the demands of global arbitration and technological advancements.
BITS Pilani Chancellor Kumar Mangalam Birla highlighted the role of the private sector in the education system in the country.
“With an investment of approx. At a cost of Rs 1,500 crore, it is a future-ready campus designed to accommodate 5,000 students at peak capacity,” he said.
The constellation of institutions under BITS Pilani includes -BITS School of Management (BITSOM), a global business school and BITS offering integrated degrees in Law and Law and BITS Design School (BITSDES).
