Nakuloofa: A 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tonga Islands on Sunday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) gave this information. The shallow earthquake came at a distance of 90 km (56 mi) in the south-east of Pangai village, and the warning spread to the Niyu Island nation. The American Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert, stating that “tsunami waves are possible from 0.3 to 1 meter above the tide level on some banks of Neu and Tonga.”
Earlier it was warned that “the dangerous tsunami waves produced by this earthquake are possible within 300 kilometers along the banks of Tonga.” In Tonga, the authorities warned the residents to stay away from the beaches and coastline. The Tonga National Disaster Risk Management Office wrote on Facebook, “People living in low-level coastal areas should please go to high places or interiors.”
Why earthquakes occur in Tonga
At the moment, there is no immediate report of any loss or casualties. Tonga is a Polynesian Empire located in the South Pacific Ocean, which includes over 170 islands. There are white sandy beaches, coral rocks and dense tropical rainfall. It is more than 3,500 km (2,000 mi) from the east coast of Australia. Earthquakes are common in Tonga. It is a low-level archipelago, with around 100,000 people living and it is located on the seismic ring of fire. It is a rapid tectonic activity arc exists from Southeast Asia to the Pacific Basin.
This powerful earthquake has come after a recent seismic activities series, which shows the ongoing geological instability of the South Pacific region. On March 28, Myanmar caused a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in the afternoon, which was near Mandalay, causing many buildings to collapse and damaged other infrastructure such as the city airports.
