Should you worry about microplastic? , Mint

Ever since Austrian scientists first started their search in people in 2018, microplastics have turned into blood, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart and even brain. They have also been found in placenta and breast milk.

It is no secret that these small particles, which can be less than 5 mm to 2 μm (micron), may occur in the human body. They are omnipresent in air, food and water. They degrade plastic waste and accumulate from the wear and tears of everyday products such as tires, paint and synthetic clothing of the car.

Are they harmful, still not clear. These “particles” can have a role in various health problems, from infertility to heart attack and cancer. They can cause physical damage by blocking tubules or scratch tissue. Or they can cause chemical damage to cells. They can also act as micro -trojan horses for various heavy metals, allergies and bacteria that are glued to them.

In a study published in New England in 2024, the Journal of Medicine scientists examined the scrapping plaque from the arteries of 257 patients who had the process of removing it (to reduce the obstacles). Microplastics changed in more than half of cases. Over the next three years, those patients were four times the possibility of a heart attack or stroke, or to die for any reason, compared to patients without detectable microplastic in the plaque. However, it is not clear whether the particles had to blame. Their presence in the arteries can be a sub -product of biological changes that cause these health problems.

Some studies in the lab have found that microplastic cells can damage cells, tissues and DNA and promote cancer growth. But a problem with lab-based experiments is that the particles used in them do not reflect those that people actually swallow or breathe. More than a dozen types of plastic have been found in human tissues, from the molded edge to fiber string, in all shapes and sizes. The most concern is Nanoplastics (which is smaller than 1) m). They are quite small for passing into the bloodstream through the lining of the intestine and lungs. Larger particles from 10 andm are unlikely to enter human cells. When breathed, they are usually expelled by the body’s “mucous escalator” that brings them to swallow and emit from the lungs.

In contrast, early laboratory experiments used only one type of plastic, sterile spherical beads of polystyrene, which were larger than the nano-shaped range. Size also matters. Among the better studied nanomaterials, more grated shapes are the most harmful. Scientists are now developing more relevant microplastic cocktails for experiments by breaking items such as water bottles with ways that simulate natural wear and tear.

It is impossible to avoid microplastics. In 2019, a team from King’s College London found that the daily deposits from air in Central London reached 1,000 microplastics per square meter. And these were only 20 andm larger particles.

It is possible to reduce contact with microplastics, avoiding food and drinks packed in plastic, using low synthetic clothes and cleaning domestic dust. Plastic containers cause heating a lot of microplastics, so microwaves should also be helped by avoiding prepared and plastic kettles. A European research of over 70 organizations is trying to reject specific loss to human health from consortium microplastics and what kind of regulation can be warned to prevent them. For now, there are more questions than the answer.
