CNN reported that COSMOS 482, a piece of an old Soviet spacecraft, is expected to return to Earth around May 10, after more than 50 years of being sent to Venus, CNN said.
Due to its strong heat shield, it cannot completely burn when it resumes the Earth’s atmosphere. This makes it different from most space junk, which usually separates and burns before hitting the ground.
The Soviet Space Research Institute (IKI) started in the 1960s during the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. A large mission of this was Venera program, which sent Venus to a spacecraft.
In 1972, two investigations were initiated. Only one (V-71 number 670) reached Venus and sent the data back for 50 minutes. The second investigation (V-71 number 671) failed and stuck in the Earth’s orbit. It was later renamed to Cosmos 482, which was also written as Cosmos 482.
Over time, the bits of this unsuccessful spacecraft broke and fell to Earth. Now, scientists feel that the main part of Cosmos 482 will return this week. It is a heavy metal capsule.
Experts say it is very solid like a bowling ball, as it has been in space for so long. Although it was a parachute, it is unlikely to work now due to years spent in space.

If it falls on the ground, it can land anywhere between 52 degrees north and south, including large parts of the world. The region includes Africa, Asia, USA, Europe and Australia.
