5 August 2024. Sheikh Hasina can never forget this date. The morning of that day was frightening. There were thirsty protesters of blood outside. There was a pressure to resign on him. According to the report of the first one, when the army officials had asked Sheikh Hasina to resign amid violent protests of the students on the morning of 5 August 2024. Sheikh Hasina fled to India a few hours before the protesters entered Garhbhavan and vandalized the Prime Minister’s residence. This was revealed by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam during the hearing at the International Crime Tribunal.
Meeting held late on August 4, tense
According to India Today, during the hearing of the case, the Chief Prosecutor presented a glimpse of Sheikh Hasina’s last few hours in Bangladesh. According to him, at that time Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhary had first asked Sheikh Hasina to step down. However, many top leaders of the ruling Awami League rejected the idea.

Tajul Islam told the tribunal that a very stressful and meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s residence on the night of 4 August. Senior members of the cabinet and all the heads of security forces attended this meeting. There was a sharp noise in it. The then Defense Advisor Major General (Retired) Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui had suggested that Sheikh Hasina should resign. However, Sheikh Hasina angrily dismissed the idea and directed the Army Chief to remain firm and crush the protests.
How was the atmosphere of anger
In the late night meeting, Siddiqui suggested firing at some protesters in an attempt to suppress the protests. It has been said in the report that he had also proposed to fire bullets on the crowd in Dhaka by helicopter. The Bangladeshi Air Force chief got angry at this. He angrily told Sheikh Hasina, ‘He (Tariq) has immersed you, and he will immerse you again.’
Sheikh Hasina’s last few hours
The next morning on August 5, as soon as the protests were out of control, military and police officers held another important and secret meeting of Sheikh Hasina. Police told Hasina that the army and police personnel were almost tired and they have ended weapons and ammunition. After this, the army officials again suggested that Sheikh Hasina should resign. However, in anger, Sheikh Hasina retorted and said, ‘So shoot me and bury me here in Garhbhavan.’
The younger sister fell on the leg
After this, military officials held another separate meeting with Sheikh Hasina. In this, the army told Hasina that the protesters are moving towards Garhbhavan from all sides and the time is short. This happened when Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana urged her to step down. Even Hasina’s legs fell. However, the former Prime Minister remained adamant.
How to accept Hasina
When there was no option left, military officials approached Hasina’s son Sajib Vajed, who lives in America. Eventually Sajib Vajed convinced Hasina to leave the post to avoid bloodshed. Sheikh Hasina wanted to record a speech aired on TV before leaving Bangladesh. However, military officials turned down it and gave them only 45 minutes to leave as thousands of people had reached the door of Garhbhavan. After this, Hasina left for India by a helicopter with her sister.
