LOS ANGELES — The historical drama “Shogun,” a sweeping tale of the struggle for power in feudal Japan, led the pack among contenders for this year’s television Emmy Awards with 25 nominations on Wednesday.
The first season of the FX Network series will compete for best drama, the top Emmy trophy, against Netflix’s final installment of British royal saga “The Crown,” Apple TV’s “The Morning Show” and more.
Another FX show, the restaurant thriller “The Bear,” received 23 nominations, a record for a comedy. Its second season — which follows the quest to transform a Chicago sandwich shop into a world-class eatery — will again compete for best comedy, a category it won at the last Emmys.
Other comedy nominees include ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” about an underfunded Philadelphia school, and HBO’s “Hacks,” about a 70-year-old comedian and a millennial writer.
Netflix’s series “Baby Reindeer,” about a bartender who is stalked by a customer, is nominated for best limited series, one of its 11 nominations. Creator and star Richard Gadd has said the story reflects a true story, though the defamation suit argues that its portrayal of the stalker is exaggerated.
Limited series competitors include Netflix’s psychological thriller “Ripley,” FX’s “Fargo” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.”
Netflix topped all networks with 107 nominations, including 18 for “The Crown.” FX had 93 nominations, slightly ahead of the 91 nominations from Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO and streaming service Max.
The winners of the Emmy, television’s highest honor, will be announced Sept. 15 at a red-carpet ceremony broadcast live on Walt Disney’s ABC. The honorees will be selected by nearly 22,000 performers, directors, producers and other members of the Television Academy.
The last Emmy Awards ceremony was held just six months ago in January, after the ceremony was delayed the previous year because of a Hollywood writers and actors strike.
Diversity in nominees
For the upcoming awards, 36 artistes competing for the trophy are first-time nominees.
These include five “Shogun” actors, including Japanese stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai in the lead drama actor and actress categories. The series, a remake of a 1980 miniseries, is set in the year 1600 with dialogue in English and Japanese.
“This year we’ve seen an increase in representation across all fields,” said Variety senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson.
Jackson said for the first time, the comedy actress field is dominated by women of color. Nominees include Quinta Brunson for “Abbott Elementary,” Ayo Edebiri for “The Bear,” Selena Gomez for “Only Murders in the Building” and Maya Rudolph for “Loot.”
Indigenous performer Lily Gladstone, who played supporting actress in “Under the Bridge,” and Kali Rees of “True Detective” were also nominated. “Reservation Dogs,” about four Indigenous teens in Oklahoma, was nominated for best comedy.
Oscar winner Jodie Foster received her first Emmy nomination as an actor for the series “True Detective,” set in Alaska and filmed in Iceland. Foster thanked her colleagues on the show.
“After struggling to save our lives in the snow and finding our way in the dark, we could not love and trust each other more,” he said in a statement.
Carrie Coon, star of “The Gilded Age,” nominated for best drama, praised the crew who brought the historical drama to life.
“The industry has really struggled since the strike,” said Koon, who is nominated for best drama actress. “I would say it’s been tough for everybody, especially for utility artists like us who work behind the scenes. The amount of hours they work is unbelievable.”
Other acting nominations include “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White, Jean Smart for “Hacks” and Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon for “The Morning Show.”
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Larry David, who plays an angry man who sharply criticizes disturbing behavior, was nominated for best comedy actor and best comedy actor for a series.
“It warms my heart to see that misanthropy is finally being recognized as an art form,” David said in a statement.
