After working in films and shows like Ponniyin Selvan I & II (2022) and Made in Heaven Season 1 & 2, Hollywood seemed like an obvious move for Sobhita Dhulipala. Shobhita on choosing risky roles like Monkey Man
In Monkey Man she plays Sita, a call girl whose business is the pleasure of powerful but despicable men. When asked what it was like to make a career out of playing marginalized characters like Monkey Man, Sobhita said, “They are really beautifully complex human beings. To be considered someone who can be trusted with characters like this is really an honor… If something inspires me or there is some value that I can bring to the story, I Want to join.”
On landing Monkey Man as a first-time filmmaker
Shobhita also revealed how she auditioned for the role of Sita in Monkey Man even before the release of her first film in India (Anurag Kashyap’s 2016 film Raman Raghav 2.0). The actor said that it took several years for the team to get back to her, and in 2019, Dev told her that he had decided from that very moment that she would be perfect for the role.
When asked if working with Dev in his directorial debut as her first Hollywood film was a risky move, Sobhita said of their dynamic, “It’s a different kind of relationship altogether. There’s trust, there’s fear, there’s vulnerability, and you move forward as a group, a team. There’s a certain purity and passion there – working with a first-time filmmaker. So I got on board, I jumped on board.
