Experienced tribal leader Shibu Soren, who played an important role in the creation of Jharkhand, died on Monday (August 4), leaving behind the legacy of power, struggle and disputes on Monday (August 4).
Shibu Soren breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi at 8:56 am on Monday.
He survived his wife, Rooti Soren, and children – Hemant Soren (who is the Chief Minister of Jharkhand), Basant Soren (MLA) and Anjali Soren (a social worker). His elder son Durga Soren passed away in May 2009.
Shibu Soren was central for the politics of Jharkhand and was a unique heritage. He was the face of tribal politics in the state and played an important role in the formation of Jharkhand.
He co-established the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which is now a political party under the leadership of his son Hemen.
Political leaders in the spectrum mourned the death of Shibu Soren. Prime Minister Narendra Modi “told him as a grassroots leader, who arose through the rank of public life with unwavering dedication to the people.”
PM Modi said, “He was especially emotional about empowering tribal communities, poor and Dalits. He suffered from his death. My thoughts are with his family and fans. Jharkhand CM Shri Hemen Soren ji spoke and expressed condolences.”
Shibu Soren’s early life
Shibu was from the Satell Tribal community. He was born on 11 January 1944 in Nemra village of Ramgarh district, then in Bihar.
According to Soren’s family, her early life was marked by individual tragedy and deep socio-economic conflicts.
Soren was 15 years old when her father, Shobaran Soren, was allegedly killed by Moneyenders in Lukayetand Forest in 1957. This had a profound impact on them and became a catalyst for their future political activism.
He was 18 years old when he co-established the Santhal Yuva Mukti Morcha. Later, he was distinguished in 1972 as the co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
Tribal icon
Shibu Soren was the face of tribal identity politics in the Sharkhand. His political life was defined by continuous advocacy for tribal rights.
He established JMM, formed to raise tribal communities for regional autonomy and regain separate land.
Soren’s party soon became a primary political voice for the demand of a separate tribal state and got support in Chaunnagpur and Santhal Pargana areas.
It is said to have shaped her as a tribal icon against Soren’s ground level against feudal exploitation.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said Shibu Soren “was one of the leading architects of the state’s movement” and turned the decades of tribal claims into a political force, which gave birth to a new state.
The death of 81 -year -old Soren marks the end of a political era in which the tribal movement was seen to be rising to national prominence.
Shibu Soren’s political visit
With a career spread over four decades, Shibu Soren served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a Union Minister and Member of Parliament (MP).
He was the CM of Jharkhand thrice – in March 2005 (for just 10 days from March 2 to March 11), August 27, 2008 to 12 January 2009 and December 30, 2009 to May 31, 2010.
Each word was short -lived due to the delicate nature of coalition politics in the state.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served as a Rajya Sabha MP for two conditions.
As an important person in the UPA government, he served as the Union Minister of Coal from 23 May to 24 July 2004; November 27, 2004 to March 2, 2005; And 29 January to November 2006.
Shibu was the patron of JMM. His leadership is often credited with the creation of the state of Jharkhand in 2000.
Soren served as the head of JMM for 38 years by April 2025, when he was made the founder patron of the party.
His son, Hemen Soren, succeeded him as JMM President in April 2025 and continued to shape the party’s legacy.
The party is currently a member of the opposition India block at the national level.
‘Dishm Teacher’
Shibu Soren was known as ‘Dishm Guru’ (leader of Bhoomi) or ‘Guruji’.
In an interview in 2017, Shibu Soren said, “I am not myself why I am called a dish guru. I do not know who has given this title to me. I know the word ‘dish’ means ‘country’ or ‘the world’.”
Disputes
Shibu Soren’s life was also marked by a series of controversies, and his ministerial stints at the center were seen with serious legal challenges.
In 2006, he was convicted in the 1994 kidnapping and murder of his former private secretary, Shashinath Jha’s sensational 1994 – became the first Union Minister in India to face punishment.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleged that Jha was murdered in Ranchi as he had knowledge about a political payment between Congress and JMM during a confidence motion against Narasimha Rao government in 1993.
Shibu Soren was then sentenced to life imprisonment, only later in 2007 to be acquitted by the Delhi High Court in forensic and circumstantial evidence.
In July 2004, a arrest warrant was issued against him in connection with the 1975 Chirudih massacre case, in which he was named the main accused in the murder of 11 people.
He went underground for some time before being arrested.
After spending time in judicial custody, he was granted bail in September 2004 and was re -prepared in the Union Cabinet in November.
Later, in March 2008, a court freed him from all the allegations.
In June 2007, Soren survived an attempt to murder, when the bombs were thrown into a convoy near Damaria village in Deoghar district, when he was being taken to jail in Dumka after appearing in a court in Giridih.
Despite these personal, political and legal conflicts, Shibu Soren for many people in the Sharkhand remained a symbol of their long-fighting struggle for identity and self-regulations-a legacy that continues through the next generation.
