The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) wrote in a social media post, “Pressure makes diamonds, but pressure can also make stars!” from Earth and is experiencing a highly active event. NASA’s Hubble Telescope has managed to capture it.
The galaxy is undergoing something called RAM pressure stripping, which is causing lots of new stars to form at an unusually fast rate in some parts of the galaxy.
Space is filled with gas and dust that propel galaxies. This push, known as RAM pressure, can dislodge the gas and dust galaxies use to form new stars. It may also prevent new stars from forming. Still, RAM pressure can sometimes squeeze a galaxy’s gas in a way that helps form more stars.
“In this case, there appears to be no star formation at the edges of the galaxy, which bear the brunt of the removal of RAM pressure, but the rate of star formation within the galaxy is rapidly increasing!” NASA wrote .
NASA shared a photo of the dwarf galaxy and described it: “The center is not particularly bright and is somewhat covered with dust, while the outer disk and halo are wrapped around as if moving in water. Across the galaxy’s mouth, an arc of brightly shining spots marks areas where new stars are forming. The Milky Way is surrounded by smaller, distant galaxies on a dark background.”
