Scientists have discovered a small three-eye hunter named Mosura Phantoni. The surname of “C Moth”, the creature lived in the sea about 506 million years ago.
The new study was published on 13 May in the Royal Society Open Science Journal.
It belonged to an ancient group of marine organisms, called radiodonts, which belong to today’s insects, spiders and crabs. Fossils suggest that it had 16 segments and a unique body part with gills, helping it to breathe better.
This feature is similar to the parts seen in horsepo crabs and modern animals such as Woodlis. Experts believe that Mosura Phantony developed in a way like these modern beings. Search shows that ancient marine animals were already very diverse.

No animal looks like Mosura Phantoni
No living animal looks enough like Mosura Phantoni today. It had combined claws like insects or crabs. There was also a big third eye in the middle of its head.
Mosura possibly floats like a stingre, using flap to glide the underwater. Its mouth looked like a pencil sharpener, which was rolled with sharp plates.
“Although not closely related, Mosura probably floats in a similar manner as a ray, dropping many sets of its swimming up and down, such as flying under water,” Dr. Which said the curator of Paliantology and Geology at the Manitoba Museum in Moysiyuk, Vinypeg.
He said, “It was a pencil sharpner -shaped shape of a mouth -shaped and rowed with rows of serrated plates unlike any living animal,” he said.
Around the shape of a human finger, it reminds scientists of a moth, so they called it a “sea insect”. Its thorny claws were unusual, possibly used to catch small prey and move it towards its sharp mouth.
“This is a puzzle how it was actually using them to catch the prey, but we think it can seize small animals with spinal tips and pass them towards the mouth,” said Moysuk.
Mosura lived with small insects and crustsians. Mosura itself can be hunted by large marine animals such as jellyfish.
Ocean life millions of years ago
Experts say that this discovery gives more clues about how the ocean life worked millions of years ago. Interestingly, Mosura had an unusual trunk -like body part. It was usually different from similar beings seen in identical creatures.
This feature can help scientists understand how these marine animals have developed from the body like simple, worm to more complex forms.
