The iconic rings of Saturn will temporarily disappear at the end of this week due to a rare astronomical alignment, known as the ring plane crossing. The event, which occurs in almost every 13 to 15 years, will be on Sunday, (March 23, 2025) at 21:34 IST (16:04 UTC / 12:04 PM Edt), as the Earth passes directly through a plane of Saturn rings.
Why will Saturn rings disappear?
While Saturn rings are not physically missing, they will almost become irritable as their super-thunderstorms will face the Earth. Saturn is tilted 26.73 degrees as it revolves around the Sun, and this tilt causes its rings to align the edge-transport with the perspective of the earth from time to time.
Since the ring is only 30 feet thick, but spreads up to 175,000 miles from the planet, their ultra-splutter profile becomes difficult to find out from the side.
During this alignment, Saturn will appear as a yellow yellow region through most telescopes, only with the most powerful devices that are capable of detecting an unconscious line where rings are deployed.
How often does this happen?
The ring plane crossing around the Sun occurs twice during the orbit of Saturn about 30 years old, which means that the Earth only sees this rare event once every 13 to 15 years. The final event was in 2009, and the next will be in November 2025, although the ring would not be completely edged at that time, which would lead to less striking effects.
Visible challenges
