New Delhi, Renowned designer Samant Chauhan brought his cosmic vision to life with his latest collection “First Breath” on the third day of the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week.
Chauhan, who launched her eponymous label in 2005 and has carved a strong niche in the Indian fashion industry with her work based around Bhagalpur silk and intricate craftsmanship, unveiled the collection at a fashion event held at The Grand Hotel in the national capital.
Inspired by his interpretation of the galaxy, the collection reflects Chauhan’s view of the universe and its creation, presented through the artistic interplay of light, shadow, structure and ornamentation.
“This is the idea of the universe and how I brought it forward… how I think the whole thing came into being and was created,” he told PTI. I tried to capture that mystery in my collection.”
Chauhan used matka silk extensively this season to create precise, tailored silhouettes marked by elongated lines and architectural precision. The Swarovski crystals added a slight sparkle to the surface, adding to the luxurious appeal of the ensemble.
The womenswear line included gowns, skirts and tops, blending delicate embroidery with dramatic structure.
The color palette ranged from dark tones to lighter shades, with black, white, beige and gray dominating the runway, punctuated with golden details.
Many of the pieces also featured interesting work on the sleeves resembling architectural structures. Many dresses had floral decorations. “It was my understanding of the galaxy and some of the brightness on it,” Chauhan said.
Talking about the designs, Chauhan said that she tried to experiment with shapes in the collection. It featured expertly designed ensembles to highlight the architectural stitching.
“We usually try to experiment with sleeves and collars but with this collection we have tried to experiment with shapes, which we don’t usually do,” he said.
Lakme Fashion Week will conclude on Sunday with the grand finale of Tarun Tahiliani.
