Samajwadi Party on Saturday walked out of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra following ‘communal’ remarks by ally Shiv Sena (UBT). Congress leaders then reached a compromise and indicated plans to ‘discuss’ with the party and resolve the issue. Meanwhile, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar asserted that the central leadership of the Samajwadi Party is “firm on opposition unity”. The development came hours after TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction over the manner of functioning of the India Bloc.
The debate started earlier this week when MLC Milind Narvekar – a close aide of Uddhav Thackeray – praised the demolition of the Babri Masjid and ran a newspaper advertisement congratulating the people behind the incident. The Shiv Sena (UBT) secretary also posted pictures of Uddhav Thackeray, Aditya Thackeray and himself along with the support message.
“An advertisement was placed in a newspaper by Shiv Sena (UBT) congratulating those who demolished Babri Masjid. His (Uddhav Thackeray) colleague has also posted on Facebook praising the demolition of the mosque. We are leaving MVA. I am talking to Akhilesh Yadav.
He criticized the opposition for lack of coordination with other parties during the recent assembly elections and argued that the SP was not contacted during ticket distribution. Azmi also urged the Congress to reconsider its alliance with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction in the light of the message.
“If someone in MVA speaks such language, then what is the difference between them and BJP? Why should we stay with them? Congress will have to decide whether it can forge an alliance with someone who speaks like this,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, SP Rajya Sabha MP Javed Ali Khan said his party is still part of the India Bloc, but admitted that “differences” exist within the group.
