It’s an age-old question – is rice better than roti, or vice-versa? In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ginni Kalra, Chief Dietician, Aakash Healthcare Superspeciality Hospital, New Delhi, puts an end to the debate.
The dietitian said, “Roti has more minerals than rice. Although both roti and rice are high in carbohydrates, roti has more fibre and not protein, but it has the same amount of protein as rice. These are the nutrients that are lacking especially in white rice. These are two nutrients that rice, especially white rice, provides in very small amounts. Also, you feel hungry quickly even after eating a bowl full of rice because the starch in rice is very easy to digest. Also, rice is made up of simple carbohydrates. It is not fibrous. It is digested quickly and easily.”

And the importance of salt for health cannot be underestimated. Sodium retains water, which helps regulate blood fluidity.
