Roftop Garden, Marble Hall: Trump Allies attacked Pavel on Fed Renovation

Management and budget director Russell Wout sent a letter to Pavel on Thursday, demanding a reply to the renovation of $ 2.5 billion of Fed’s main building.

Vuffy said that Fed may proceed with major design changes without obtaining approval from the National Capital Planning Committee (NCPC). It can violate the Fed in violation of the National Capital Planning Act, a decades -old law that controls federal building projects in DC

Watt asked Powell to stop the construction and explained whether Fed had stuck with the NCPC plan approved in 2021 or if changes were made without changes. He also criticized the high -value tags associated with renewal, called the project hypocritical and compared it to Versay’s Palace. He said that the cost per square foot is $ 1,923, almost double the average for a historic federal building.

In a hearing before the Congress last month, Powell told the MPs that some more expensive design elements – Lash Rooftop Garden, new marble finish, and executive dining room – were no longer in the plan. But the Trump administration says that this is not clear from the official filing of the Fed.

The letter is part of a large push for the trump-fasting authorities to examine the fed and challenge Powell’s leadership. Last week, Bill Pult, director of Trump’s Federal Housing, also posted a message that was criticized for renewal. Trump has repeatedly attacked Pavel on interest rate decisions and suggested that he may declare Powell’s replacement well before the end of the May 2026 term.

The renovation project, which began after years of the scheme, means the headquarters of Fed from 1937, Marinner S. Excel is to modernize the building. Fed says that the building needs badly repair to meet the current security and safety standards. Although parts of it were updated in the early 2000s, it is the first complete renewal in about 90 years.

Fed does not trust the Congress for its funding. Instead, it earns money by catching American government bonds and other assets, then sends most of its benefits to the Treasury. This setup allows it to operate independently of the White House and Capital Hill. This also means that the Fed is able to decide for a long time how to spend on its facilities. The freedom is now being challenged by Trump officials who argue that the central bank is spending carelessly.

Nevertheless, Wout’s argument is less about money and is more about whether Fed has followed the rules. If the Powell’s team made major design changes without consciousnessing the NCPC, it could be an important part of the approval process.

It only makes anger over this renewal project more than political theater. Trump has floated the possibility of removing Powell before the end of his term, a step that would be legally difficult under the current example. But if the fed is broken by the planned rules or the Congress is misled, it can provide an excuse to try to set fire to Powell for “cause”.

Mark Spindel, founder of Potomac River Capital, said, “It seems that this is a new approach and The Myth of Independence: How Congress controlled the Federal Reserve.” Instead of removing an at-wil, it tastes to set up a merit-based case to remove the chair poly. “

But Spindel suspects that the argument will take place.

“If they wanted to claim a reason, why would they not go after the 2021-2022 policy mistake?” He asked. “The fact is that they are bending on this allegation about bee gardens on the roof, showing you that they want to get rid of it.”

Derek Tang of the Lhmeyer research team in Washington said that renewal could not rise to mismanagement levels, but it combines the widespread erosion of the Fed’s political status. Although it will not reach the bar to remove alone, he said, it can be “more like the straw that breaks the camel back.”

Under the current law, Fed governor, including the chair, can only be removed for the cause. In the Supreme Court case of 1935, the standing in the executioner of Humphri was reinforced in the United States, which compulsorily stopped the commissioners in independent agencies.

The Supreme Court recently indicated that it would maintain the President’s authority to set fire to some independent agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board. However, the court refused to give equal power to the President on the Federal Reserve. It was noted that the central bank was unique among government agencies.

If he holds, Fed officials including the Speaker can be removed for the cause of misconduct. Disagreement between the President and the Central Bank Policy makers about the path of monetary policy is usually not considered a sufficient basis.

Todd Philips, a professor of legal studies at Georgia State University, said that the legal strip to fire Powell is high, but attacks may mean to test water. Powell is making a growing chorus call to quit the post, he said, but if the President actually tries to remove it, the market will go to the Hivire. The administration has not yet shown that it is ready to allow him.

The Federal Reserve did not immediately respond to the requests of the comment on the letter. Powell has said that he takes the issue seriously and its employee is working to abstain MPs.
