New Delhi. There is a disturbing truth on India’s roads – the highest number of people who could have been saved lose their lives in road accidents. Official data shows that 168,491 people lost their lives in road accidents in the year 2022, which demands to emphasize the need to make roads safer. Road, Transport and Highways Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari has cited reckless driving, violation of traffic rules, and lack of sense of responsibility on the roads as the biggest reasons for road safety problems in India.
In such a situation, the objective of the road safety campaign is to increase awareness among people about the importance of road safety. Also, this campaign inspires to behave responsibly on the roads by adopting a sense of compassion. In the 2023 edition, several celebrities emphasized the importance of using safety equipment and following traffic rules, while embracing the principles of education, awareness, and responsibility.
Following the success of the 2023 Telethon, the Road Safety Campaign enters its second year with its knowledge partner Save Life Foundation. Under this campaign, this organization is dedicated to increasing road safety at the national level and providing emergency medical care across the country. In this edition, emphasis is being laid on creating a sense of compassion among the drivers, so that people understand the value of life and travel with compassion. With an emphasis on positive enforcement of rules, the campaign celebrates safe driving practices, thereby instilling a sense of responsibility and respect for others on the roads.
The objective is to increase awareness among people about the importance of road safety. Additionally, the campaign inspires responsible behavior on the roads by adopting a spirit of empathy:
● Respect – Respect the lives of others and change your behavior to save them.
● Restraint – Adopt this basic mantra of restraint by following traffic rules and driving at limited speed, so that the roads can be made safe.
● Safety – Adopting personal and technical safety measures to create a safe environment for all road users.
● Cooperation – To bring about change, cooperation of all is needed, in this an individual, society, and government need to cooperate together.
Understanding the vital need to empower citizens, the campaign aims to make every citizen of the country aware about the Good Samaritan Law. According to statistics, if people come forward to help those injured in accidents, 70 thousand lives can be saved.
This campaign reached eight regional parts – Chennai, Bengaluru, Kanpur, Indore, Nagpur, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Patna – to convey its message. Also, understanding the potential of the youth, the campaign also organized awareness campaigns in schools and colleges, so that the drivers of tomorrow can be made aware now.
By bringing together celebrities and experts on the telethon stage, the campaign reaches a wider audience and sparks a conversation around road safety at a national level. While infrastructure plays a vital role, responsible and compassionate driving can make roads across the country safer. However, for this, every person will have to cooperate from his/her side.
