Due to increasing age, a person can become vulnerable to various diseases, but Stanford University Studies have suggested that after age 85, your chances of getting cancer actually go down significantly.
This incident was not completely unknown. It is believed that a person’s chances of developing cancer increase during middle age and old age. However, it was observed that the risk of cancer decreased or decreased in older people.
A group of researchers led by Emily G. Schuldiner, Dmitry A. Petrov, and Monte M. Winslow conducted a study on genetically engineered mice to find out the reason for this behavior. The study findings reported on this research after being published in Nature Aging.
The study involved introducing one of the most common cancer-causing mutations, the KRAS gene mutation, into mice and causing them to develop lung cancer. The subject rats were in two different age groups – 4–6 months old and 21–22 months old. It was clear in the study that the tumor burden in old mice was two to three times less than that of young mice.
As the researchers understood, the reason was that in old age, the body develops mechanisms that prevent the development of tumors from mutations. Therefore, even though the body develops more cancer-causing mutations with age, aging tissues are better able to prevent those mutations from developing into cancer.
Digging deeper, the scientists found that tumor suppressor genes were more easily inactivated by tumors in young mice than in aged mice. This appears to be the main reason why the incidence of cancer is lower in older people. This discovery could have a profound impact on the search for a cure for cancer.

According to the World Health Organization website, 30-50 percent of cancer cases can be prevented. The main reasons behind preventable cancer are substances like tobacco and alcohol, infections like hepatitis and human papilloma virus, poor diet and lifestyle problems like obesity. Apart from this, environmental factors like air pollution, carcinogens and radiation can also cause this deadly disease.
WHO and other leading bodies are working on measures to reduce the impact of these factors. But some of them, like air pollution, are so widespread that no relief from them is likely to occur in the near future.
