A red alert was issued last week after an easyJet co-pilot fainted while flying about 200 passengers from the U.K. to Portugal. The flight managed to land safely “in line with procedures” at Lisbon airport, where the co-pilot was greeted by paramedics on the runway.
According to The Independent, the incident happened when flight EZY2459 from London’s Luton Airport was approaching its destination. A rare red alert was issued after the medical emergency to protect the crew and passengers. Incidentally, a red alert is a mandatory halt to operations on aircraft as a safety measure. Flights on the return journey to Luton were delayed by about three hours following the incident.
“EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2459 from Luton to Lisbon was attended by paramedics upon landing as a pilot member was feeling unwell. The captain landed the flight normally in accordance with procedures and passengers disembarked as normal. At no time was the safety of the flight compromised,” the publication quoted an easyJet spokesperson as saying.
The incident comes just days after a United Airlines flight left crew members vomiting due to a “biohazard” present on the plane. Flight 2477 had to land in Washington DC for a “deep clean” after a passenger fell ill, setting off a chain reaction among fellow passengers and even crew members.
“I spoke to the crew and it seems like it’s pretty bad out there. Crew members are vomiting and passengers are asking for masks everywhere,” the New York Post quoted a crew member as saying in an audio from the flight.
There have been many cases of pilots falling ill in the air before. Earlier in October 2023, both the captain and co-pilot of a British Airways flight fell ill in the cockpit after complaining of ‘bad smell’.
