Rani Mukerji and Karan Johar recently addressed the Australian Parliament ahead of IFFM. Here’s what they said for themselves and Shah Rukh Khan.
Actress Rani Mukerji and director Karan Johar addressed the Australian Parliament ahead of the Indian Film Festival Melbourne (IFFM). There, the actress said she is ‘proud’ to represent India and is looking forward to working with Shah Rukh Khan in her films alongside Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. ‘We respect him a lot in India’
Rani began her speech by saying, “I am proud to represent the Indian film fraternity at the Australian Parliament House along with my dearest friend Karan (Johar) and speak about the rich history of cinema. This is truly a milestone in the cultural ties between India and Australia.”
She then spoke about how cinema has always connected people, saying there is no better time than now for India and Australia to collaborate on films. “Our films in India have always brought families and communities together and now I see this happening globally. Indians living abroad have always embraced their roots through cinema. Indian cinema is at the forefront of shaping pop culture. They bring colour and joy to people. There is no better time than now to tell our shared stories,” Rani said.
Rani then named Australian celebrities who she believes are loved in India. She said, “We love Baz Luhrmann and his cinema and musical films. There are Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman who we love in India. They have won our hearts with their acting and talent in musical films. I am really looking forward to a romance between Nicole Kidman and Shah Rukh Khan (crosses fingers). (People cheer) And, of course, a musical film with Hugh Jackman and Rani Mukerji.”

Vikrant Massey starrer 12th Fail won the Best Film award, while Kartik Aaryan received the Best Actor award at IFFM 2024 for his film Chandu Champion. Director Kiran Rao’s film Missing Ladies was awarded the Best Film Critics Choice Award. Shah Rukh Khan’s film Dunki won the Award for Equality in Cinema. Actor Ram Charan was named the Ambassador of Indian Arts and Culture, while composer AR Rahman won the Award for Excellence in Cinema.
