Rain, risk and obstacles: how to travel safely

Monsoon is an exciting contradiction in India. A moment, the jungle is brightening the Emerald and putting the sky in a grand show; Next, roads are sinking, rivers are swollen and chaos is in the headlines. Every year, rain brings both renewal and risk – and this season is no exception.

With the right preparation, the monsoon journey can still be every bit as memorable.
With the right preparation, the monsoon journey can still be every bit as memorable.

This week, flash floods increased through Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh after a series of intense cloudbers. On the streets, the house disappeared and a local school was released into ruins. Officials confirmed three deaths. A day earlier, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Kangra, the flood near a mini-hydroelectric project in Dharamshala was washed away by more than 20 laborers. Earlier this month, the collapse of a bridge in Pune claimed four people and injured more than 50 people. The Meteorological Department of India has now issued alerts of heavy rains in Gujarat, Odisha, Maharashtra and parts of the Northeast. In Satara district of Maharashtra, access to popular tourist destinations – such as Pushpa plateau, those depths and Vajrai waterfalls, Lingamala Falls, and Ajinketra Fort – have been temporarily suspended by 19 August.

So if you are planning a migration, it is the first caution season. Leaving the hills does not mean that is missing – it means making safe, clever options. With the right preparation, the journey can still be every bit as memorable.

Caught in rain? What to do here

When heavy rains throw a wrench in your plans, the safest condition is to stay indoors. Never turn around through flooded roads, no matter how shallow it is. Strong currents, hidden drains and debris can be dangerous.

Travel Influenceer Dynasty Gaur has a simple mantra: Do not try to get ahead of the weather. “If the situation worsens, keep it.

Before traveling, ask your hotel about their emergency plans. Keep the numbers for local disaster control papers, and rely on verified news sources. Social media can quickly become a hotband of rumors during an emergency.

Pack Smart: Your Monsoon Travel Checklist

When you are packing for rain, a small plan goes a long way. There should be waterproof goods or rain cover. Bring a strong umbrella, a light raincoat, and quick-dry clothes. Rubber-cold shoes will help you stay straight on the slippery paths-leave denim and heavy cotton on the house.

A mini medicine kit stock with fever pills, treatment for abdominal infection, and allergies. Do not forget mosquito distorters, hand sanitisers, power banks and offline maps. The option of returnable ticket and flexible booking to stay ahead of surprise.

“Always pack as if you can get stuck an extra day,” says Gaur. “A compact rain kit, basic medicines, and backup charger can save the day. Keep an eye on the local weather, but do not panic – the monsoon journey can still be magical.”

Some destinations are welcome, beautiful and safe even during the most luxurious weeks. These spots have a low risk of solid infrastructure and disruption:

Goa: Beach is cool with bliss, roads remain open, and spices in succulent rural areas are dotted with fields and waterfalls – perfect for careless day trips.

Udaipur, Rajasthan: Here, the rain is light and rarely falls on the way. Lakes with fresh water, gardens thrive, and the city is easy to detect. With flood risk, it is ideal for a laid-back monsoon holiday.

Pondicherry: Keep soft rain and efficient drainage French quarter postcard-petty. Costal walks and cafes invite you to slow down and invite it to soak it all.

Ladakh: Sitting safely in a rain shade, Ladakh remains drought and bright, when the rest of the mountains get wet. Roads are clear for Leh, and the sky is often striking blue.

Thunderstorm trail, Maharashtra: If you love from outside, this Misty Forest Trek is in its best form in the monsoon. The waterfalls and currents are delicious, and with a guide, it is far more secure than other hill trek.
