Congress leader Rahul Gandhi may visit the United States of America (USA) in September, where he may meet Indian diaspora, students and MPs. This will be Rahul Gandhi’s first foreign trip since becoming the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha.
According to a report in The Print, citing sources in the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), during his stay in the US, which is likely to last 8-9 days, Gandhi will be in Washington DC, Texas, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Chicago. The visit comes at a time when the campaign for the US presidential election is at its peak.
“He (Rahul) will address the diaspora community during his stay. Like his previous visits to the US and the United Kingdom, he will also interact with students at prestigious universities. In Washington, he will also hold meetings with lawmakers from the US Congress and Senate,” the Print report quoted a Congress leader familiar with the plans as saying.
Gandhi was in the US in June 2023, where he delivered talks at Santa Clara University and Stanford University. He also interacted with entrepreneurs and tech experts in Silicon Valley before heading to Washington DC to address a press conference at the National Press Club.
Earlier, Gandhi was in the United Kingdom in February-March 2023, where he addressed the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge, the Indian Journalists Association and the Chatham House think-tank.
The report said that the upcoming trip has been planned upon the request of diaspora members who had campaigned for the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and also participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
The party’s Lok Sabha tally has risen to 99 – the most in a decade – and the subsequent appointment of Gandhi as leader of the opposition has piqued their interest.
