Search engine giant Google on Thursday created a special doodle based on traditional doors to mark India’s 78th Independence Day. The digital artwork depicts the company’s name’s alphabets ‘G’, ‘O’, ‘O’, ‘G’, ‘L’ and ‘E’ with a different ornate design on each door. Google India too shared a note on the doodle on its website. “Today’s doodle, illustrated by Vrinda Zaveri, celebrates Independence Day in India! It was on this day in 1947 that India gained independence from colonial rule,” the internet giant said in the note.
The people of India strongly desired “self-governance and sovereignty after nearly two centuries of inequality, violence, and deprivation of fundamental rights”.
About freedom struggle
The Indian freedom movement, led by prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose, was made possible through civil disobedience. The perseverance and sacrifices of the country’s freedom fighters brought them success, he said.
On Independence Day, many people participate in flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, musical performances, community rallies, etc. to celebrate.
The note said, “Homes, buildings, streets and cars are decorated with the saffron, white and green national flag, as seen in today’s artwork. Millions of citizens also sing the Indian national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, throughout the celebrations. Happy Independence Day, India!”
Independence Day commemorates India’s liberation from British rule on August 15, 1947. Flag hoisting ceremonies, tributes to freedom fighters and cultural programmes are held across the country on this day. At Delhi’s Red Fort, the Prime Minister leads the nation in paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence, while schools and colleges organise events to celebrate the spirit of patriotism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hoisted the national flag for the 11th consecutive time at the Red Fort in the national capital on the occasion of 78th Independence Day.
The theme of Independence Day this year is ‘Developed India @ 2047’. The celebrations will serve as a platform to renew the government’s efforts towards making the country a developed nation by 2047.
