Rahul Gandhi believes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “killed” small businesses in India. He was speaking about India’s unemployment problem during a speech in Madhya Pradesh. He mentioned that India’s unemployment has overtaken that of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
According to Gandhi, PM Modi’s policies are responsible for this. His policies, he said, have adversely affected small enterprises. The Congress leader particularly described demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as serious setbacks.
“Today the country has the highest unemployment in the last 40 years. India has double the unemployment compared to Pakistan. We have more unemployed youth than Bangladesh and Bhutan because Narendra Modi has destroyed small businesses by implementing demonetization and GST. ” ANI quoted Gandhi as saying in Gwalior.
India’s youth unemployment rate was a staggering 23.22%. According to the World Bank’s 2022 report, Pakistan’s unemployment rate was 11.3% and Bangladesh’s was 12.9%.
Gandhi said, the economic strategies of the Modi government have been particularly harmful for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.
Rahul Gandhi on social injustice
Gandhiji also talked about social injustice. He said that backward communities, tribal people and Dalits together constitute 73% of the population, yet their representation in major companies is negligible.
He said, “Not a single person among these 73% people will be found in big companies. Then, Modi ji says that I am working for the poor.”
Gandhi also questioned the reluctance to conduct caste census. He suggested that this would reveal the real socio-economic condition of Dalits, tribals and backward classes.
“Why would anyone object to this? Narendra Modi ji says that there is no caste in the country. There are only two, the poor and the rich. If so, then how did you become an OBC?” He asked.
