Actor Rahul Bose talks about the fascination with ‘stars’ that he thinks still exists – and why it should continue to exist.
Rahul Bose believes in saying ‘Kudaal’ and ‘Kudaam’. Recently seen in the web film Berlin, which also made waves at several film festivals, Bose feels that the difference between a commercial star and an art actor is very much alive in the industry.

Elaborating on this, the 57-year-old actor said, “A star is someone who is accepted by the audience, irrespective of his acting ability. But don’t get me wrong, many stars are good actors. But when the audience comes to like the stars [actor] Tom Cruise – whether he’s playing a Vietnam War veteran or a fighter pilot – nothing matters more than the actor’s charisma, which can transcend factors like script, performance, and role.
Bose has delivered impressive performances in films like Shaurya (2008), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Bulbul (2020) in his two-decade career in the film industry.
Bose believes that it is impossible for actors who are not considered stars to attract audiences on the basis of name alone. “There is an established spectrum in the industry. So, people often think, ‘Oh, this guy will not attract people just by name but he can attract people because his role is interesting.’ Accordingly, you may feel great after meeting the star, but when you meet the actor, you can appreciate him, even if a little late,” he concluded.
