Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the list of the world’s best universities “QS World University Rankings 2025: Top Global Universities”. This year, the London-based higher education analyst has released its largest ranking ever. UniversitiesThe list includes over 1,500 universities from 105 higher education systems. The US is the most represented country with 197 institutions, followed by the UK with 90 and China with 71 institutions.
As per the list, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top spot for the 13th consecutive year. Imperial College London has jumped four places to displace the University of Cambridge from second place. Oxford University and Harvard University are third and fourth respectively, while the University of Cambridge has slipped to fifth place.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, MIT tops all three parameters adopted by the higher education analyst. Its overall score is 100, academic reputation score is 100 and employer reputation is also 100.
Founded in 1861, MIT has grown into an academic institution with nearly 1,000 faculty members and more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
The independent and coeducational institution is organised into five schools: (1) Architecture and Planning; (2) Engineering (3) Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (4) Management (5) Sciences and one College (Computing).
Close collaboration between industry and research has helped MIT alumni start more than 30,000 active companies, create 4.6 million jobs, and generate annual revenues of approximately $1.9 trillion.
Imperial College London

Established by royal charter in 1907, it is ranked second in the QS World University Rankings 2025 list. This year, ICL has jumped four places to displace the University of Cambridge from second place on the list.
According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, CIL has an overall score of 98.5, academic reputation score is 98.5 and employer reputation is 99.5.
ICL offers 67 undergraduate and 155 postgraduate programmes across science, engineering, medicine and business alone. University of Cambridge
University of Cambridge One of the oldest universities in the world and the largest in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is a public collegiate research university.
According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, the University of Cambridge has an overall score of 96.7, academic reputation score of 100 and employer reputation of 100.
The University of Cambridge offers 32 undergraduate and 299 postgraduate programs. Cambridge has 31 colleges. Three are for women (New Hall, Newnham and Lucy Cavendish) and two admit only graduates (Clare Hall and Darwin). The remaining colleges provide accommodation and teaching for all students enrolled in courses of study or research at the university. Each college is an independent institution with its own property and income.
