Hyderabad News Hindi: Hyderabad scientists are engaged in the protection of the rare ‘Bhupathi Ka Purple Frog’ found in the Western Ghats. This 8 million years old ancient frog appears only during the rainy season in the year. Researchers are providing protection and training to local authorities by estimating its population with bio -Costics technology.
Bhupathi’s purple frogHyderabad: Hyderabad scientists are busy saving a very special and ancient frog species. The name of this frog is ‘Bhupathi’s Purple Frog’, which is found in the forests of the Western Ghats. This frog is 8 million years old, that is, it has been in existence since the era of dinosaurs, it is called ‘Gondwana’s gem’, it remains inside the ground and only once a year comes out in the rainy season, it is very difficult to find it because it is very rare.
Identified in 2017
Bhupathi’s purple frog was first identified by a team of CCMB in 2017, in which Dr. S. Jagath Janani, Dr. Ramesh K. Agarwal and Dr. Vasudevan were involved. In its advanced laboratories in Hyderabad, scientists confirmed the uniqueness of this species by intensive gentic barcoding and voice analysis and established a separate identity from its relative Indian purple frog. These frog species are extremely threatened due to being found in their limited and small areas because the remaining houses are also ending rapidly due to pollution, use of water sources and destruction of housing. Since these frogs mostly live under the ground, it is challenging to find out its correct number.
Use of bioachastics’ technology
Dr. Vasudevan and his team are mainly using ‘Bioacostics’ technology, using special equipment to record the sounds of male frogs coming from under the ground. These sound recordings collected from remote rivers of the Western Ghats are analyzed by the Hyderabad -based scientists team, which form the basis of their conservation strategy.
