Punjab continues to reel under severe floods, causing the northern state paralyzed and the authorities were forced to close educational institutions. According to an order from the Punjab government, all government and private schools, colleges and universities were directed to be closed till 7 September. Now, this question remains – has the authorities expand the holidays?
Punjab’s School Education Minister, Harjot Singh Bains, all governments, private and aided schools, colleges and universities will reopened from tomorrow as usual.
However, if an institution is affected by floods, the decision to close it will rest with the Deputy Commissioner of the concerned district.
Issuing the direction for school management, Minister Bains said: “It will be mandatory for the management of private schools to ensure that school construction and classes are completely safe to guarantee the safety of students and teachers.”
Government schools closed for students by 8 September
The minister further clarified that all government schools in Punjab will remain closed for students on 8 September. Teachers, however, need to report for duty to fully inspect the school premises. Any issue or structural defects should be immediately informed to the Deputy Commissioner and the Engineering Department.
In addition, cleaning will be conducted with the help of school management committees (SMC), panchayats, municipal councils and corporations. Once these inspections and security checks are completed, the schools will reopened to the students starting from September 9, 2025.
Rising death toll
The toll of death in Punjab floods has increased to 46, with three deaths in the last 24 hours. About 19,998 villages have been affected in 23 districts, with Gurdaspur amidst the worst hit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit deluse To take stock of the situation. Punjab is currently facing one of its worst flood disasters over decades. Fonded Sutlase, Beas and Ravi rivers with seasonal reviews have submerged a large part of the state after heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. In recent times, the incessant rains in Punjab have further increased the crisis.
Will Chandigarh also expand the holidays of Himachal School?
Along with Punjab, schools in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh were also ordered to be closed till 7 September. Officers are expected to decide soon whether the institutions have to expand the bandh after re -opening or reviewing the weather conditions.
So far, about 22,854 people have been rescued from the worst hit areas. NDRF, Armed Forces, BSF, Punjab Police and local volunteers continue the round-the-clock rescue operation. To support the displaced people, 219 relief camps have been set up, giving shelter to more than 6,100 persons.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) also confirmed the ongoing missions in Punjab, Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir. “Indian Air Force helicopters continue to provide relief operations … Empty 541 people from Jalmore-Chamba region and airlifting more than 10,000 kg required relief materials in Kullu and Kishtwar areas. IAF has assets for follow-up work, reflecting their unique commitment for humanitarian assistance,” the statement is said.
