As temperatures drop and winter arrives, our cravings shift towards comforting, nutritious food. Although it is tempting to eat rich and heavy dishes, not everything we eat is beneficial for our body during the cold months. From digestive issues to weight gain and lethargy, certain foods can cause more harm than good.
To help you navigate your winter diet wisely, Amita Gadre, a clinical nutritionist based in Pune, Maharashtra, shared 5 things you should avoid eating this season in her December 15 Instagram post. 1. Amla Candy
Amita says, “Amla is good, Amla is not candy.” “It is full of sugar.” Instead, she suggests adding freshly grated amla to your chutneys, dal, sabzi and salads to get the benefits without the added sugar.
2. Chyawanprash
“I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but Chyawanprash is something you really don’t need,” says Amita. “Vegetable soup has far more antioxidants than Chyawanprash, and it’s also full of sugar. No one needs that, not even children.”
3. Dry Fruit Laddus
While rich in nutrients, dry fruit laddus can be extremely high in calories. “One laddu can easily contain around 200 calories. If you’re trying to lose fat, a handful of dry fruits is enough,” she advises.
4. Ready-packaged Soup
“Ready-packaged soups contain a lot of sodium and barely any other nutrients,” warns Amita. She recommends consuming home-made soups instead.
5. Excess of ghee
“In winter we travel less, want to be comfortable and are naturally a little lazy,” says Amita. “The last thing we need are extra calories from fat.” She also suggests limiting ghee consumption during the colder months.
